Mountains to Sea – Kaiwhakauka Track to Mangapurua Track

Exploring the Kaiwhakauka Track

Located in the heart of the North Island, the Kaiwhakauka Track is a 14 km section of the Mountains to Sea Cycle Trail. This track links Whakahoro to the Mangapurua Track and is known for its challenging terrain, especially in wet conditions. Checking the weather before setting out is essential, as the track can be difficult to navigate when wet.

Scenic Farm Track and Hidden Waterfall

The first stage of the Kaiwhakauka Track takes you along a picturesque farm track on Blue Duck Station. This section features winding paths high above the Kaiwhakauka Stream. As you cycle, you'll pass through areas of regenerating native forest interspersed with farmed land.

These landscapes bear witness to the unsuccessful attempts to settle the Kaiwhakauka and Mangapurua valleys. Along the way, you can discover a hidden, unnamed waterfall, complete with canoes. It's worth asking about this unique spot at the Blue Duck Station café.

Entering Whanganui National Park

The second stage of the track leads you into the Whanganui National Park. Here, you'll face a 300-metre climb through established forest, eventually connecting with the Mangapurua Track. This section offers a more immersive experience of the park's natural beauty and is a highlight for those seeking a deeper connection with the area's lush environment.

Getting to the Kaiwhakauka Track

To access the Kaiwhakauka Track, head to Whakahoro, which serves as the starting point via Oio Road from State Highway 4, accessed south of Owhango.

This area is part of the larger Mountains to Sea Cycle Trail. To continue from the Mangapurua Track, you need to book a jet boat ride to Pikiriri, then bike the Whanganui River Road towards Whanganui.
