Exploring the Pariatua Trek

Located at Blue Duck Station above Whakahoro on the edge of the Whanganui River, the Pariatua Trek is a very remote, rewarding adventure for those interested in witnessing the regeneration of native forest. This trek is an opportunity to observe the station owners’ conservation efforts while enjoying expansive views of the Kaiwhakauka Valley.

Challenging Terrain and Scenic Views

The Pariatua Trek is a challenging hike that takes two to three hours to complete. It features significant uphill sections, making it suitable for those physically prepared for a demanding walk.

To reach the start of the Pariatua Trek, head to Whakahoro and Blue Duck Station at the end of Oio Road. Start on the Kaiwhakauka Track and follow it for about an hour to the waterfall. Nearby, there is a 4WD route that marks the start of the trek. You will hike from the Kaiwhakauka Track, about 100 metres above sea level, to over 400 metres, then follow the ridge line north towards Whakahoro. There is a step descent back to Oio Road, followed by a short walk back to the start.

As you walk, you'll gain a deeper appreciation for the regenerating forest, which is actively protected and nurtured by the station's owners.

How to get to Blue Duck Station

From State Highway 4, just south of Owhanga, head west on sealed Oio Road. This road becomes gravel about two-thirds of the way along.

While in the area, you can also visit the Ohinetonga Reserve. The Mountain to the Sea Cycle Trail also follows the Kaiwhakauka Track.
