Discover Nugget Point in the Catlins

Located on the coast of the Catlins in South Otago, Nugget Point is a popular destination famous for its stunning views of the lighthouse and the Nuggets, a group of rocky islets. The short, easy walk to the lighthouse draws many visitors eager to capture the dramatic scenery. Much like the iconic Wānaka Tree, Nugget Point's cliff-edge lighthouse is a favourite for photographers experimenting with digital filters, though capturing the perfect light can be challenging.

Scenic Walks and Wildlife

Nugget Point is a side trip from the Southern Scenic Route and features two simple 20-minute return walks from the car park at the end of The Nuggets Road. The first walk leads to a viewing platform overlooking Tokata Point and The Nuggets, adjacent to the lighthouse perched on a steep headland.

The second walk takes you to Roaring Bay, where a viewing platform and bird hide offer the chance to observe local wildlife. The area is home to various seabirds, including gannets, royal spoonbills, and a large colony of kekeno (fur seals). You might also spot hoiho (yellow-eyed penguins) from the hide, though sightings require patience and are best at dawn or dusk.

Historical Significance of the Lighthouse

The lighthouse at Nugget Point has a rich history. Built in 1869 and operational by 1870, it was constructed from locally quarried stone and stands 76 metres (249 feet) above the water. Initially powered by an oil burner, it was converted to electricity in 1949. The lighthouse was automated in 1989 and is now monitored and operated by Maritime New Zealand. You can walk up to the lighthouse, although it is fenced off from the walking track. It is a reminder of the importance of assisted navigation along this treacherous stretch of coast.

Getting to Nugget Point

To reach Nugget Point, head south from Balclutha on the Southern Scenic Route and take Kaka Point Road to the coastal village of Kaka Point. Continue south along the coast on Esplanade, which becomes The Nuggets Road. This 23 km deviation from the highway takes about 30 minutes.

After exploring Nugget Point, you can return via Nugget Point Road, turning west onto Karoro Creek Road, then northwest on Ahuriri Flat Road to reconnect with the Southern Scenic Route. Owaka is nearby to the southwest, providing easy access to the rest of the Catlins.

Alternatively, you can take Ahuriri Flat Road southwest. This gravel road offers spectacular views and leads to Cannibal Bay. After visiting the bay, continue northwest to rejoin the Southern Scenic Highway and reach Owaka.
