Exploring Ohinetonga Reserve

Located south of Taumarunui on State Highway 4, the small settlement of Owhango is home to the Ohinetonga Reserve. This area is a great spot for spotting the rare whio, or native blue ducks, along the Whakapapa River. The reserve also provides a scenic setting for a short walk and a peaceful stopover.

Walking Tracks and Blue Ducks

Once you arrive at the reserve, you can enjoy a walk along the riverbank. A short loop track meanders through the forest, a tranquil experience amidst native flora. Keep an eye out for the whio, which are often seen among the rapids south of the bridge. The bridge itself is a gateway to more remote hiking and mountain biking trails, including the 42 Traverse Track.

On the north side of the reserve is a grassed area, perfect for a picnic.

Getting to Ohinetonga Reserve

To reach Ohinetonga Reserve, head south from Taumarunui on State Highway 4 until you arrive in Owhango. Follow the signposted roads into the reserve and drive to the parking area next to the Whakapapa River. The drive takes 18 minutes and is 22 km.

Other places to explore in the region include Oio Road to Whakahoro and Blue Duck Station, on the edge of the Whanganui River. Heading south on the highway, you can access State Highway 47 at Waimarino, which takes you to State Highway 48 and the Tongariro National Park, the Tawhai Falls, Whakapapa and the Bruce Road.
