Orakei Korako: A Geothermal Gem Near Rotorua
Orakei Korako, also known as The Hidden Valley, is a remarkable geothermal area located 67 kilometres from Rotorua. This remote spot is well worth the 53-minute drive, offering a unique experience with its stunning silica terraces and other geothermal features.
Geothermal Wonders and Terraces
Orakei Korako is home to the largest silica terraces in New Zealand, a significant feature since the destruction of the Pink and White Terraces in 1886 due to Mount Tarawera's eruption. The terraces begin with the Emerald Terrace and continue with several others, each adorned with colourful algae thriving in the heated waters.
One of the standout features is the Golden Fleece Terrace, known in Māori as Te Kapua, or The Cloud. This terrace stretches 40 metres long and stands 5 metres high, covered in a striking white sinter coating.

How to get there
To reach Orakei Korako from Rotorua, take State Highway 5 and turn right onto Tutukau Road just before crossing the Waikato River. Continue on Tutukau Road until you reach Orakei Korako Road, which leads to the thermal area. From the car park, a boat ride across Lake Ohakuri, a hydro lake on the Waikato River, takes you to the steaming terraces.
The formation of Lake Ohakuri raised the Waikato River by 18 metres, submerging two-thirds of the original geothermal area, yet what remains is truly spectacular.
Other places to visit around the Rotorua geothermal region include Maunga-kakaramea / Rainbow Mountain, Waiotapu and Kerosene Creek.
