Exploring Ōwhiro Bay

Ōwhiro Bay is the last suburban bay accessible by road on the southwest coast of Wellington. Surrounded by steep hills and cliffs, although this bay is dotted with houses, it feels apart from the city. One compelling reason to visit is the scenic coastal track to Pariwhero Red Rocks, a popular spot for both walking and biking.

Coastal Walks and Attractions

At the end of Ōwhiro Bay Parade, there is a parking area and visitor centre, where you can learn about the region's history and the Taputeranga Marine Reserve through informative panels. The reserve, managed by the Department of Conservation, extends from Ōwhiro Bay to Houghton Bay to the east. This area of the coast is especially rich in rock pools, exposed as the tide retreats. As Ōwhiro Bay's beach is primarily rocky, it is unsuitable for swimming.

The end of the road transitions to a 4WD track with controlled access, leading westward around more bays and beaches. From here, it's an easy 3 km walk or bike ride to Pariwhero Red Rocks. This area is known for its striking coastal scenery and colours.

Getting to Ōwhiro Bay

To reach Ōwhiro Bay, drive through Happy Valley from central Wellington on Ohiro Road, then Happy Valley Road, a 6 km trip for about 9 minutes. Alternatively, take the coastal route along Ōwhiro Bay Parade from Lyall Bay near the airport.

Following the coast east from Ōwhiro Bay is a great way to extend the visit. The Sirens Rocks, Island Bay, and Houghton Princess Bay are all easily accessible by car, foot or bike, with interesting rocky coasts. Continuing past Lyall Bay and the airport takes you to the north end of the Miramar Peninsula and its beaches.
