Discover Pelorus Sound Viewpoint
Pelorus Sound Viewpoint is located along the scenic Queen Charlotte Drive, just before reaching Havelock. This viewpoint provides expansive views over Pelorus Sound and the town of Havelock. A short walk from the car park leads you to Cullen Point, which stands 180 metres above the sound. For those with more time, there is a loop track around the point.
Historical Context of Pelorus Sound
Pelorus Sound was first charted in 1838 by Philip Chetwode aboard HMS Pelorus. The name 'Pelorus' is also found in other Marlborough locations, such as the Pelorus River and Pelorus Bridge. Interestingly, a pelorus was a navigational tool used on sailing ships, named after one of Hannibal's navigators around 203 BC.
How to Get There
Pelorus Sound Viewpoint is a 5-minute, 3.2 km drive along Queen Charlotte Drive from Havelock. From Picton, it is 48 minutes and 31 km.
