Exploring the Ancient Puhikereru Rimu Tree
Located within the Howden Bush Scenic Reserve, the Puhikereru Rimu is a remarkable 1,000-year-old tree, and one of New Zealand's oldest known rimu. This ancient tree is a short detour off the Queen Charlotte Track, situated between Furneaux Lodge and The Pines.
Characteristics of the Puhikereru Rimu
The Puhikereru Rimu, while not exceptionally tall for its age, reaches about 30 metres. In contrast, rimu of similar age typically grow between 40 and 60 metres. However, its breadth is notable, with a diameter of 2 metres and a canopy spanning 25 metres. A platform encircles the tree to protect its roots, and several large vines drape elegantly from its canopy, enhancing its majestic presence.
How to get there
The Puhikereru Rimu is an easy 5-minute detour for walkers and cyclists on the Queen Charlotte Track as it passes through the Howden Bush Scenic Reserve. If you are only visiting Furneaux Lodge, it is a few minutes walk south along the Queen Charlotte Track to the side track.
From Furneaux Lodge, you can also do day walks on the track with boat drop-offs and pick-ups. Start from Punga Cove and walk to the lodge on the Queen Charlotte Track, or from Mereto / Ship Cove.
