Discovering Rakatu Wetlands
Situated next to the Lower Waiau River in Southland, the Rakatu Wetlands showcase a successful habitat restoration project. Managed by the Waiau Trust, these wetlands are a chance to explore rejuvenated wetlands.
A Commitment to Restoration
In 2000, the Waiau Trust purchased a 278-hectare property along the Waiau River. This acquisition included 65 hectares of existing wetlands, which have since been expanded by an additional 50 hectares. The remaining land supports farming and commercial pine forestry, providing funds for the ongoing development of the wetlands.
Exploring the Scenic Wetlands
The Rakatu Wetlands feature approximately 9 km of walking tracks that wind through and above the wetlands. These trails are an excellent opportunity to observe the area's diverse plant and animal life. The wetlands are bordered to the west by Fiordland National Park and the Waiau River, enhancing the scenic appeal of the location.
Getting to Rakatu Wetlands
To visit the Rakatu Wetlands, take the Southern Scenic Route south from Manapouri for about 17 km, or travel 61 km north from Tuatapere. The access road to the wetlands is clearly marked. Once there, you can explore the extensive walking tracks and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere of this restored habitat.
Nearby, you can also visit Fiordland National Park at Lake Monowai, the Borland Road, and Lake Hauroko. For a more secluded experience, consider the Big Totara Walk.
