Discover Tūātapere
Tūātapere is a small town in Southland, located about 10 km north of Te Waewae Bay. It is uniquely positioned as the only town between Riverton / Aparima and Manapouri on the Southern Scenic Route. This makes it an ideal starting point for exploring the Hump Ridge Track, one of New Zealand's Great Walks, and the rugged South Coast Track. Both tracks can be accessed from Papatotara Coast Road at the west end of Te Waewae Bay. Additionally, the town provides access to Fiordland's natural beauty, including Lake Hauroko, Lake Monowai, and Borland Road.
A Town with a Logging Heritage
Historically, Tūātapere was a bustling centre for logging, surrounded by extensive ancient native forests and with a rail connection to Invercargill. Over time, the local forestry industry declined, giving way to farming. More recently, tourism has been a growth industry reflecting the town's location, which has maintained its relevance.
Today, Tūātapere is home to a logging museum that reflects its past. The town also claims the title of New Zealand's Sausage Capital, with a grocery store offering these local delicacies. You will also find cafes, galleries, and accommodations catering to travellers.
Explore Scenic Walking Tracks
Tūātapere surprises with its excellent walking tracks. The Tuātapere Scenic Reserve, located on the northwest side of the Waiau River, features a mature forest stand accessible by foot or via Elder Drive from the highway. The Green Heart Reserve, a smaller area, can be accessed between the Memorial Library and the large Hump Ridge Track panel as you enter the town from the north. Walking along the river from the bridge offers superb views, especially on a calm day.
Historical Railway Remnants
As you head south through Tūātapere, you will encounter the historic railway station, old wagons, and some surviving railway cottages. The railway line, which operated from the early 1900s until 1976, was a vital link until the segment between Riverton and Tūātapere was closed. The town is intending to further develop this aspect of its history.
