Exploring Waterfalls and a Rockslide Near Gisborne

Located near Gisborne on the East Coast region of the North Island, the area around Rere has two waterfalls and a natural rockslide to explore. You can confine yourself to scenic views of these natural features, or take your chances on the rockside!

Rere Falls

Rere Falls is situated just over 10 minutes up Wharekopae Road from the Eastwoodhill National Arboretum. The falls stand 10 metres high, but their impressive width is what truly captures attention. You can view the falls from the car park or take a short walk down to the base. This spot is ideal for a picnic and a refreshing swim in the pool below the falls.

Rere Rockslide

A short drive of 2 to 3 minutes further along the road will bring you to the Rere Rockslide, one of the best free activities in the Gisborne region. This natural rock incline is approximately 60 metres long, descending at about a 30-degree slope into a deep cushioning pool at the bottom. The constantly running water of the Wharekopae River over the smooth rock bed creates the exhilarating natural water slide.

Safety Considerations

While the rockslide is incredibly fun, it's important to be aware of the risk of serious injury. The natural rock surface can be unpredictable, with varying water flow affecting your speed as you descend. For the safest experience, bring a boogie board, bodyboard, or similar flotation device rather than using cardboard.

Wear appropriate clothing, including swimwear and water shoes with good grip are also important. Always supervise children closely, and check the water depth in the pool before sliding, especially after dry periods when levels may be lower. Be aware of other sliders and wait for your turn to avoid collisions on the rock face.

Best Time to Visit

The rockslide attracts hundreds of visitors each day during the warmer months from November to March. Water flow varies seasonally and is best after rain when water levels are higher. Summer offers the warmest water temperatures and most comfortable conditions, making it the ideal time for families. If you're visiting during peak season, arrive early in the day to avoid crowds and secure a good spot near the slide.

While the site is open year-round, the water is cold in Winter.
