Discovering River Road in Whirinaki Forest
River Road is located on the west side of the Whirinaki River, just beyond the entrance sign for Whirinaki Te Pua-a-Tāne Conservation Park near Minginui. This narrow, sometimes rough, metal road runs parallel to and above the Whirinaki River, leading to the main car park within the forest. The journey along River Road is notable for its transition from exotic pine forests to areas of native regrowth, culminating in a car park surrounded by ancient native trees.
A Journey Through Changing Landscapes
As you begin your drive along River Road, you'll pass through a mature pine forest currently undergoing clear-felling. Although the landscape may initially appear stark, these areas are scheduled for rejuvenation with native seedlings from the Minginui Nursery.
Continuing along the road, the scenery shifts to early forest recovery, showcasing 20 to 30 years of regrowth. Here, dense bush encroaches on the narrow road, creating a more enclosed, natural atmosphere. A few kilometres further, you'll encounter more mature native trees, leading to the highlight of the journey: the magnificent ancient trees surrounding the main car park.
How to Get There
The main route to the park is State Highway 38 through the expansive Kaingaroa Forest, which leads to Marupura. From there, take Te Whaiti Road towards Te Urewera. At Te Whaiti, turn onto Minginui Road, which follows the Whirinaki River valley to the small town of Minginui. The main entrance to the forest on River Road is just beyond the town.
Other places to visit around the park include Te Whāiti Nui a Toi Canyon, Wiremu Merito Reserve and Mangamate.
