Discover Wiremu Merito Reserve
Wiremu Merito Reserve is part of the larger Whirinaki Te Pua-a-Tāne, located on Old Te Whaiti Road. This is a rough forestry road that runs along the west side of the Whirinaki River. This reserve is opposite the Whirinaki Recreation Camp. The reserve has several short walking tracks that lead you through recovering forests and past impressive large trees.
Walking Tracks and Scenic Views
The reserve features three short walking tracks, each taking approximately 45 minutes to an hour to complete. On the west side of the road, you will find the Wiremu Merito Reserve Track and the Recreation Camp Lookout Track. These trails begin in areas of regenerating forest and quickly lead to stands of magnificent large trees. Along the way, small panels provide information about the native shrubs and trees you encounter. Although the view from the top of the lookout track is now obscured by forest regrowth, the hike through the forest remains rewarding.
A third track begins near the Recreation Camp and offers an easy loop walk through native forest to the Whirinaki River. This track is particularly enjoyable in summer when swimming in the river is more pleasant.
How to Get There
To reach Wiremu Merito Reserve, travel along Old Te Whaiti Road, a forestry road that runs alongside the Whirinaki River. After 3.7 km, you will arrive at the Whirinaki Recreation Camp, with the reserve located directly opposite.
Other places to visit in and around the forest park include Te Whaiti Road, Te Whaiti Nui a Toi Canyon, Mangamate, River Road and Minginui.
