Exploring Salisbury Falls

Salisbury Falls is located in the Aorere Valley, a short drive from the Langford Store in Golden Bay, South Island. This spot is particularly appealing for fans of The Hobbit trilogy, as the falls were featured in the films. The waterfall is attractive, and after heavy rain it becomes a powerful spectacle.

Discovering the Falls

To reach Salisbury Falls, take the signposted turnoff on Aorere Valley Road, approximately five kilometres from the Langford Store. After crossing the bridge, you'll find access to the falls on the left, across a paddock. A short hike down a rough track leads you to the base of the falls, where the Salisbury Creek flows over the falls and into the Aorere River. The falls themselves are not visible until you begin descending the track.

The height of the falls is modest at 4 metres, but after heavy rain, they transform into a dramatic cascade. The colourful water polished stones and rocks at the pool's base enhance the scene, creating a picturesque setting. In less violent conditions, you can climb up to the falls and walk back along the creek’sgorge to smaller cascades.

Nearby Sights

For a stunning view of the Aorere River, walk back across the bridge. Although Salisbury Falls is not visible from here, you can enjoy the sight of several smaller waterfalls cascading off the gorge's side during rain. Near the bridge, you'll also find a rectangular frame, the remnants of a swing bridge dating from 1887 that was destroyed in a 2010 flood. Remarkably, the water filled the gorge to the height of the main bridge at the time.

Swimming and Safety

Swimming below the falls is usually safe when the waterflow is normal. However, conditions can change after heavy rain, so exercise caution.

How to Get There

To visit Salisbury Falls from Collingwood, drive along Aorere Valley Road and look for the signposted turnoff about five kilometres from the Langford Store. Cross the bridge, and you'll find access to the falls on the left, across a paddock. The track to the falls is rough but short, leading you directly to the base.

Other places to visit around the Aorere Valley include the start of the Heaphy Track, Devils Boots and the Goldfields Track.
