Exploring Sandspit on the Matakana Coast

Sandspit is a charming beach town and significant marina located at the northern end of the Mahurangi Peninsula, part of the Matakana Coast in Auckland. Just a short 10-minute drive from Warkworth or Matakana, Sandspit combines accommodation options, safe swimming and boat access.

Marina and Recreational Activities

Sandspit features a large marina, protected by a causeway, with ample parking for trailer boats. The marina crosses the tidal flats and supports a wharf in the channel carved by the river. Nearby, a commercial campground offers a convenient place to stay, with a wide beach perfect for safe swimming when the tide is low. Sandspit also serves as the gateway to Kawau Island, with ferry and water taxi services available. Among the options is a historic mail run cruise, providing a cost-effective way to explore the area.

The town is positioned near the tidal mouth of the Matakana River, which flows into Kawau Bay and the Hauraki Gulf. This area is a sanctuary for seabirds, including blue herons and the Kōtuku ngutupapa (royal spoonbills). As the tide recedes, you can easily walk along the coast and enjoy the natural beauty.
