Exploring Scorching Bay

Located on the Te Motu Kairangi / Miramar Peninsula, Scorching Bay is a delightful destination for those exploring the striking Wellington coast. Known for its picturesque sandy beach, Scorching Bay is an ideal spot for safe swimming and relaxation.

Development of a Popular Beach

The area was traditionally used by local iwi, including Te Āti Awa, for fishing and seasonal gathering, as its sheltered waters and abundant marine life made it an ideal site. The name Scorching Bay is believed to date back to the 1800s and may refer to the bay’s sunny, north-facing aspect.

In the early days of European settlement, the beach became popular for recreation, and by the early 1900s, it was established as a favourite seaside destination, especially with improved road access to the Miramar Peninsula from the city.

Amenities and Attractions

As a suburb of Wellington, Scorching Bay has good amenities. Parking is available right beside the beach, making it easily accessible, and there are public toilets, changing rooms, and outdoor showers. Additionally, one of the few coastal cafés on the peninsula is situated just across the road from the car park, offering a perfect spot to enjoy a meal or a coffee with a view.

How to get there

To reach Scorching Bay from Central Wellington, take State Highway 1 towards the airport. Turn onto Shelly Bay Road and follow this north around the edge of the Miriamar Peninsula to its northeast corner, where you will find the bay.

Nearby, on the peninsula, you can also visit Point Halswell, Mount Crawford, Worser Bay, Breaker Bay, Point Dorset and Tarakena Bay.
