Suspension Bridge Track in Hunua Regional Park
Located in the scenic Hunua Regional Park in Auckland, the Suspension Bridge Track is a captivating walk that begins at the car park on Otau Road. This track is particularly notable for its swing bridge, positioned at treetop level and providing an exhilarating view high above a ravine.
Walking the Track
After crossing the impressive swing bridge, the track meanders along a ridge through regenerating bush for approximately 40 minutes. Along the way, you'll encounter several viewpoints, but the highlight is a large stand of tanekaha trees. These native New Zealand "celery" trees are commonly found individually, but seeing such a substantial group together is a rare treat. This stand is regrowth and probably up to 100 years old.
As you continue, the track leads to a main viewpoint overlooking the Wairoa Dam and reservoir. From here, you have the option to descend to the dam and walk along it. Below the dam, a spacious grassed area is perfect for picnics. You can then return to the car park via the road, completing a loop or retrace your steps along the track. The entire loop takes about 90 minutes to complete.
Getting to the Suspension Bridge Track
To reach the Suspension Bridge Track from Hunua, head south on Hunua Road for about 7 km to Moumoukai Road. Turn east for 1.8 km, then a left turn into Otau Road, with the car park immediately on your left. The track access is a short walk down the road from the car park.
You can also take a very short walk to explore two hidden waterfalls, accessible via an unmarked track located at the rear of the car park. Across the road from the car park is the access to the Wairoa Loop Track, a longer loop on the east side of the road and reservoir.
