Exploring Tairua
Tairua, located on the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsula in the North Island, is a scenic town where the Tairua River enters the Tairua Harbour, which then meets the Pacific Ocean. The town is framed by the striking twin volcanic peaks of Paku to the east, Ocean Beach to the northeast, and the harbour to the south, with Pauanui on the far side.
Activities and Attractions
Both Tairua and Pauanui provide access to the harbour, making them popular destinations for boaties. This area is ideal for water activities, with ample space in the harbour and the option to head out to sea. The towns are connected by shared walking and cycling trails on either side of the harbour, although these paths are still being linked. Large grassy reserves on both sides offer ample space for relaxation and various water activities.
A notable feature is the one-way bridge at the entrance to Tairua, a favourite spot for jumping into the water at high tide. And a chokepoint for traffic during busy periods.
Services and Amenities
The town features a well-stocked supermarket, boutique shops, cafes, and restaurants serving fresh local fare. There is also a commercial campground near the town centre, and a wharf at the south end of the town and harbour. Freedom camping is permitted in specific locations near Ocean Beach.
