Exploring the Tairua River

The Tairua River originates deep within the southern part of the Coromandel Range on the Coromandel Peninsula. It flows through the historic gold mining area of Broken Hills, and continues past Hikuai to Tairua Harbour. You can kayak the river, and there are swimming holes.

Swimming and Kayaking Adventures

Along the Tairua River, there are several unmarked swimming holes that you can access before reaching Broken Hills. Finding these spots may require some exploration or local guidance.

For a different perspective, consider kayaking from the DOC campsite at Broken Hills. Paddle downstream to Hikuai, passing through a mix of native forest and farmland. Along the way, you can take breaks at various swimming holes. Upon reaching Hikuai, navigate under the State Highway 25 bridge and look for a small, steep sandy or grassy exit area on the right.

River Conditions and Experience Level

The Tairua River is generally calm, with shallow, gentle rapids. The primary challenge is avoiding getting stuck in the riverbed, especially during dry spells when water levels are low. The kayaking journey takes about 2 hours and is considered safe and suitable for beginners, a relaxed experience rather than an adventurous one.

How to Get There

To access the Tairua River, take State Highway 25A to Hikuai on the east side of the peninsula and turn onto Puketui Valley Road at Hikuai. The road closely follows the river to the walking tracks and DOC campsite at Broken Hills. Broken Hills is 44 minutes and 44 km from Thames, 1 hour and 59 km from Whitianga and 2 hours and 146 km from Auckland.

At Broken Hills, there are old mining tracks to explore. Nearby places to visit include Pauanui, Mount Pauanui, Ocean Beach at Tairua, and Paku.
