Discovering The Chasm
The Chasm is a notable short walk located in the Cleddau Valley, adjacent to the Cleddau River in Fiordland, New Zealand. This beautiful area is an easy walk into the verdant rainforest typical of the region. The track suffered significant damage during a major storm in 2020 but has since been mostly restored.
Exploring the Track
The Chasm track is an easy gravel path, approximately 400 metres long, and takes about 20 minutes for a return walk. It winds through a section of old-growth rainforest, featuring ancient kāmahi trees draped in lichen and moss. The walk concludes at the top of The Chasm, where you can observe the Cleddau River cascading over a uniquely sculpted rockface.
Remnants of the former viewing point and bridge are visible, with plans to replace them as part of the ongoing restoration efforts.
How to Get There
The Chasm is accessible via a large car park located directly off the Milford Sound Highway, about one kilometre northwest of the Homer Tunnel. From Te Anau, the drive is 108 km and takes 100 minutes.
Other stunning but short, easy walks in the region include Marian Creek Falls and the Humboldt Falls on the Lower Hollyford Road, Christie Falls on the Milford Sound Highway, and the loop track at Milford Sound.
