Exploring the Ancient Waiau Kauri Grove
Located just 1 km east of Waiau Falls along the 309 Road, the Waiau Kauri Grove is a remarkable stand of ancient kauri trees. These towering trees have survived since the 1800s and early 1900s, when much of the Coromandel Peninsula's ancient forest was logged. The grove's well-formed track, complete with footbridges and boardwalks, allows you to get up close to these majestic trees.
Surviving the Axe
It is not entirely clear why this grove of trees survived the axe, given that the region was largely clear-cut. However, it is located in one of the most remote parts of the peninsula, from where it would have been challenging to extract big logs. Although there was an earlier track, it was probably after 1910 that the 309 Road was suitable for vehicles. By that time, the kauri industry was in decline and interest in preservation was on the rise.
Getting to the Waiau Kauri Grove
To reach the Waiau Kauri Grove, drive 4 km south from Coromandel Town on State Highway 25, then turn onto the 309 Road. Park at the Waiau Falls trail parking area on the left. From there, walk 1 km along the road to access the track leading to the grove. Please note that parking is currently not available beside the track access.
Nearby, you can also visit The Waterworks, located a short distance west along the 309 Road. If you continue along the 309 Road, you will reach Whitianga on the east coast of the Coromandel.
