Exploring Waverley Beach: A Coastal Gem
Located northwest of Whanganui, Waverley is a small town that provides access to the scenic Waverley Beach. This coastal area is known for its stunning views and geological features, including cliffs and a sea cave, making it an interesting stop for travellers on State Highway 3. There is also a campsite on the coastal cliffs.
Discovering the Beaches
The access road to Waverley Beach takes you to a clifftop parking area, with access to two beaches, separated by the cliff at high tide. The larger beach, known as Long Beach, is on the northwest side and can be accessed from a boat ramp that descends between the cliffs to a black-sand surf beach. From the top of the boat ramp, you can enjoy a panoramic coastal vista in both directions. Looking northwest, a wind farm is visible. As you head down, you get a wonderful view of the cliffs to the southeast.
On the southeast side of the parking area, you can walk down to the smaller Cave Beach, also via an old boat ramp. This small, picturesque beach is adorned with driftwood and surrounded by eroded cliffs. A notable feature is the cave, which can be explored when the tide recedes.
How to get there
To visit Waverley Beach, drive northwest from Whanganui on State Highway 3 for about 35 minutes until you reach Waverley. In the town, turn onto Waverley Beach Road and continue for a 10-minute drive to the settlement and beach access. Parking is available at the top of the cliff, with separate areas for Cave Beach and Long Beach.
