Exploring Whangamatā Beach
Whangamatā Beach, located on the southeast side of the Coromandel Peninsula, is a distinctive surf beach near the bustling town of Whangamatā. Positioned between Waihi to the south and Pauanui to the north, this white sand expansive beach is a popular destination for surfers and beachgoers alike.
Beach Features and Activities
Whangamatā Beach is characterised by its two separate crescents, divided by a flat sand point. This formation allows you to wade out quite far when the surf is calm at low tide. Several islands lie opposite the sandy point, including Whenuakura Island, known locally as Doughnut Island, which features a central hole. You can carefully navigate a small boat or kayak through a tunnel to access this natural formation.
Despite its popularity, especially during holiday periods, the beach's size, over 5 km long for the two crescents, helps disperse the crowds. For a more relaxed experience, visit outside of New Zealand holidays and Summer weekends. The beach is generally safe for swimming, with a flagged area monitored by surf patrol for added safety. The patrol operates from Labour Day (end of November) to Easter.
Accessing Whangamatā Beach
The most convenient access points to Whangamatā Beach are via Hunt Road and Esplanade Drive. These routes lead directly to the beach, making it easy to enjoy a day by the sea.
