Exploring Awatere Valley

Awatere Valley, located near Blenheim in Marlborough on the South Island, is a picturesque destination known for its vineyards. The valley runs parallel to the more famous Wairau Valley, and a drive through this valley combines the golden dryland hills and valleys of the northeast South Island with rows of grapes. The valley is especially colourful during Autumn when the vineyards are particularly striking.

Discovering the Historic Bridge and Vineyard Views

As you drive from Blenheim on State Highway 1, you'll pass over the scenic Weld Pass and Dashwood Pass before reaching Awatere Valley. The town of Seddon marks the head of the valley. Just before Seddon, take a moment to stop at the historic two-storey rail and road bridge, which has been a part of New Zealand’s main highway for over a century.

Continuing through Awatere Valley, find a safe spot to pull over and enjoy the breathtaking views of vineyards stretching up the valley. While these views are captured beautifully in autumn, spring and summer reveal a lush green carpet framed by the dry hills.

Venturing into the Remote Molesworth Region

If you travel south down the valley between 1 October and mid-April, you can access the Molesworth region, one of New Zealand's most remote driving routes. Before you begin this journey, check the sign at the valley's entrance to ensure the road is open, as conditions can vary. This remote drive takes you all the way to Hanmer Springs in North Canterbury.

How to Get There

To reach Awatere Valley from Blenheim, take State Highway 1 south towards Seddon. Three km north of Seddon, take Awatere Road into the valley. You can connect with Marama Road to return via Seddon on SH1.

Nearby places to visit include Lake Grassmere, Marfells Beach and Cape Campbell, and Ward Beach.
