Exploring Casnell Island in Mahurangi Harbour
Casnell Island, the largest island in Mahurangi Harbour at the end of Scotts Landing, is located on the Matakana Coast in Auckland. Managed by the Department of Conservation (DOC), this uninhabited island, mostly covered in shrubs and pōhutukawa trees, with some regenerating forest, is an opportunity to explore a place that has been largely left alone for 200 years.
Navigating the Island's Terrain
From the car park at Scotts Landing, head east along the beach, with the historic Scott’s Homestead, at low tide. Casnell Island is accessible as the tide retreats, with a 100-metre walk across a shell and sand causeway to the island. The island is mostly cliff-bound, but on the west side, you'll find a steep, grass-covered gap in the cliffs with a single step up.
Although the path may be obscured by long grass, you can make your way through to the scrub and trees, where the track becomes more visible. This track runs the length of the island, winding through a mix of forest regrowth, including kanuka and kōwhai, as well as open, grassy areas. Mature pōhutukawa trees add to the island's charm.
Scenic Views and Historical Significance
Casnell Island provides stunning views over Mahurangi Harbour and the Te Kapa River from the cliff edges at both ends. However, exercise caution, as there are no barriers near the edges. Historically, the island served as a pā site in the 1700s, strategically positioned within the harbour. While exploring, you may notice remnants of its past role, despite the forest regrowth.
