Discover the Church of the Good Shepherd

Situated on the shore of picturesque Lake Tekapo, the Church of the Good Shepherd is a historic landmark dating back to 1935. This church is famous for its simple yet appealing design and is a stunning viewpoint overlooking the lake. It has long been a notable stop for those travelling through the area.

Architectural Design and Construction

The design of the Church of the Good Shepherd was initially sketched by local artist Esther Hope, known for her watercolour paintings of the Mackenzie Country. The sketch was transformed into architectural plans by R.S.D. Harman.

The construction specifications were notably strict to preserve the site’s natural quality. No plants, including the hardy and thorny matagouri bushes, were to be removed. Rocks along the wall line were left undisturbed, and any new stones used in construction had to be sourced from within five miles and kept in their natural state. The abundance of suitable rocks along the lakeshore made this requirement feasible.

An interesting historical feature of the church is its connection to the original Tekapo Bridge. After the bridge was demolished in the 1950s, its wood was repurposed to create the vestry cupboard in the church.

Interdenominational Services

The Church of the Good Shepherd is interdenominational, welcoming people of all faiths. Services are held throughout the year, making it a spiritual hub for locals and visitors.

How to get there

The church is located next to the lake shore on the east side of the township, and the Tekapo River. Road access is via Pioneer Drive, with two access points on State Highway 8. There is parling along this road, above the stony shoreline of the lake. If you walk from Tekapo township, there is a scenic footbridge over the river between the lakefront reserves on both sides.

From Christchurch, the drive via Geraldine is 240 km and takes 3 hours 20 minutes. From Queenstown, it is 271 km and 3 hours 35 minutes.

Nearby, you can hike or drive to the top of Mount John and drive to Lake Alexandrina.
