Exploring Mount John near Tekapo

Mount John, located on the south side of Lake Tekapo, is home to the University of Canterbury Observatory. This spot offers stunning 360-degree views of the lake, surrounding golden tussock-clad hills and mountains, snow-capped in Winter, and the MacKenzie Basin. At the summit, you can also enjoy a visit to a well-regarded café.

Hiking and Driving Options

You can choose to hike up Mount John from the south end of Lake Tekapo. The hike takes about 1 hour and involves a 300-metre climb that is steep in places. It starts from the west end of the lake beyond the campground.

For those short on time, driving is an option between 9 am and 4 pm. There is a modest toll for road access. Times can vary, so it is advisable to check the schedule before heading up in the afternoon.

How to Get There

To reach the access road for Mount John, drive west on State Highway 8 from Tekapo for a few kilometres. Then, turn right onto Godley Peaks Road. Continue along this road until you see the entrance to Mount John on your right. From the gate, the road is sealed but narrow in places, so take care. The drive from Tekapo takes about 15 minutes.

You will also find gorgeous Lake Alexandrina a bit further down the Godleys Peak Road. Other places to visit nearby include Church of the Good Shepherd, Burkes Pass, Mackenzie Pass, Lake Pukaki, Twizel and Lake Ruataniwha.
