Clifden Bridge, Waiau River and Caves

Discovering Clifden Bridge

Located north of Tuatapere in Southland on the Southern Scenic Route, the historic Clifden Bridge spans the Waiau River, a significant waterway connecting Lake Te Anau to Lake Manapouri before flowing into Te Waewae Bay. This bridge is a testament to early 20th-century suspension bridge technology, replacing the earlier punt ferry service that once served as the river crossing. You can see a surviving example of this kind of service at Tuapeka Mouth in South Otago.

The Lake Manapouri Hydro Scheme

At the parking area and freedom campsite near the bridge, you will find an informative panel detailing the effects of the Lake Manapouri hydro scheme on the Waiau River. This project raised the level of Manapouri and diverted some of the water that had previously flowed down the river into the underground. Doubtful Sound hydropower station. This has made the river more tranquil and less prone to extreme flooding, albeit the restrictions on the water level have always been controversial.

Exploring Clifden Caves

Just east of the Waiau River on Clifden Road, you can explore the Clifden Caves. If you decide to venture inside, be sure to check the DOC site for safety information and bring a torch, as the passages quickly become narrow, damp and dark.

Formed over thousands of years by groundwater carving channels through soft rock, the caves feature narrow passages, sculpted chambers, stalactites, and glowworms in places. The route requires care, with some sections needing hands-and-knees crawling, so it’s best suited to confident, prepared explorers. Allow up to two hours to cover the 1 km underground route.

How to Get There

To reach Clifden Bridge, travel north from Tuatapere along the Southern Scenic Route (State Highway 99). The bridge is easily accessible from the highway, with a parking area available for visitors.

From Clifden, you can also explore Lake Huaroko, Lake Monowai and the Borland Nature Walk.
