Discover Te Waewae Bay
The Southern Scenic Route from Tuātapere to Riverton / Aparima in Southland is a captivating drive that provides easy access to Te Waewae Bay, a stunning 27 km wide bay on the southern coast. This route is perfect for those interested in exploring remote beaches, rugged forests, or embarking on the multi-day Hump Ridge Track, one of New Zealand's Great Walks, or even the wild South Coast Track in Fiordland National Park.
Exploring the Surrounding Landscapes
The region features a mix of green rolling farmland, remote beaches, cliffs, and dense forests. Te Waewae Bay stretches from Sand Hill Point to Pahia Point, with the Waiau River, meaning "river of swirling currents," flowing into it. The river divides the bay, with access to the western side only via a bridge at Tuātapere, located 10 km north of the bay.
To reach the bay west of the river mouth, take Papatotara Road and Papatotara Coast Road from Tuatapere. Papatotara Coast Road leads to The Cliffs, where a track descends to the beach. Further along, you'll find the remote Bluecliffs Beach. The journey ends at Fiordland National Park, accessible from the Rarakau car park, marking the start of the Hump Ridge Track and the South Coast Track.
