Exploring Dublin Bay on Lake Wānaka
Dublin Bay, located on the southeastern shore of Lake Wānaka, is a quiet destination perfect for a day of exploration. The bay provides stunning reflections on calm days, making it an ideal spot for photography and relaxation. There is a rough 4WD road around the lake edge to the north side of the lake outlet, suitable for cyclists, hikers, and fishing.
Activities and Scenery
Once you arrive at Dublin Bay, you can easily find parking and begin your exploration. The bay's gravel edge and the 4WD road are perfect for a leisurely walk. Exotic pine trees provide some shelter, while there is a significant amount of mānuka and kānuka shrubbery. Be cautious of the thorny rosehip and native matagouri plants that grow there.
On a still day, the reflections in the water create a picturesque scene that is well worth experiencing.
How to get there
To reach Dublin Bay, start from State Highway 6 heading towards Hāwea. Cross the single-lane bridge over the Clutha River at Albert Town, then turn left onto Dublin Bay Road. This road is a 4 km metal track that eventually becomes suitable for 4WD vehicles, biking, or hiking as you approach Dublin Bay.
There are numerous other activities around Wānaka and Hāwea. Near to Dublin Bay, you can discover the Butterfield Wetlands Reserve, on the Hawea River Track. From there, it is a short walk or bike ride to the Lake Outlet, then on to Beacon Point, the Beacon Point Walk and the Wānaka Lakefront
