Exploring Friendly Bay in Ōamaru
Ōamaru, located on the North Otago Pacific Coast, is known for its unique blend of historical charm and modern attractions. While much of the waterfront is commercial, Friendly Bay stands out as a welcoming spot for visitors. Sheltered by Cape Wanbrow, this bay features a beach and is near the Ōamarau Heritage Precinct.
Historical Significance and Modern Upgrades
Originally developed as a commercial harbour and fishing port, Friendly Bay was equipped with a protective breakwater and three wharves. The land behind the bay was used for commercial purposes, including a railway siding to the wharves. However, like the nearby Victorian Precinct warehouses, the area has been significantly upgraded for public enjoyment.
Family-Friendly Attractions and Steampunk Delights
Next to the bay, you'll find one of New Zealand’s most intriguing children’s parks, featuring Steampunk-themed attractions such as a giant penny farthing bike. Close by is a popular brewpub, while a Steampunk-themed café marks the official end of the Alps2Ocean Cycle Trail. For a unique perspective, take in the view from the footbridge alongside Wansbeck Street and explore the nearby Steampunk sculptures.
Scenic Walks and Gardens
For a leisurely stroll, head around the Esplanade towards the Ōamaru Blue Penguin Colony visitor centre at the tip of Cape Wanbrow. Alternatively, walk north along the grassed area past the bike park to a footbridge, where you'll discover the beautifully maintained Harbourside Gardens alongside Ōamaru Creek.
Getting to Friendly Bay
To reach Friendly Bay, head to the south end of Ōamaru, near the Heritage Precinct. The bay is southeast of the precinct, accessible and provides a perfect starting point for exploring the area's historical and modern attractions.
While in Ōamaru, you can also visit Ōamaru Public Gardens, the Ōamaru Lookout Point at Cape Wainbrow and Bushy Beach.
