Ōamaru Whitestone is a distinctive cream-coloured limestone quarried in Ōamaru, a coastal town on the South Island’s east coast. This locally sourced stone became the building material of choice during the Victorian era, creating one of the country's most remarkable architectural heritage districts with over 70 protected historic buildings. This is one of the most substantial collections of concentrated collection of commercial heritage buildings in New Zealand.
Exploring Ōamaru's Victorian Heritage
The town's Victorian-style buildings were constructed in the 1800s using Waitaki Whitestone, a form of limestone that is a prominent feature of the Waitaki region, especially near Duntroon. With over 70 buildings registered with the Historic Places Trust, Ōamaru's Victorian charm is unmatched in New Zealand. The distinctive architecture creates a remarkable streetscape that transports visitors back to the colonial era.
Many of Ōamaru's historic buildings are situated at the south end of Thames Street, between Coquet Street and Itchen Street. This area features significant public buildings that have been carefully renovated. In addition to admiring the architecture, note the two Whitestone war memorials in the middle of the road.
As you reach the south end of Thames Street and turn east onto Itchen Street, you'll enter the old Victorian warehouse district, now referred to as the Victorian or Ōamaru Heritage Precinct.
Once dilapidated by the 1970s, these warehouses have been restored and now house interesting shops, galleries, cafés, and even a microbrewery. The stores in this area often embrace the Victorian theme, with staff donning period attire. Around mid-November, the town holds a festival highlighting all things Victorian.
The walk itself takes about 20 minutes one way, but to fully appreciate the area, it's recommended to spend at least a couple of hours.
The Steampunk Twist on Victoriana
Upon reaching Itchen Street, you will also spot the Steampunk HQ Museum. The museum, housed in a historic whitestone grain store, is a mesmerising collection of retro-futuristic art installations, sculptures, and interactive exhibits that blend 19th-century industrial design with science fiction whimsy. You can explore everything from towering mechanical creatures and elaborate light displays to quirky contraptions that wouldn't look out of place in a Jules Verne novel. You will also see examples of this whimsical design in and around the nearby Friendly Bay Steampunk Playground.
