Exploring Ōamaru Lookout Point

Ōamaru Lookout Point is a scenic park located on the high point of Cape Wanbrow, approximately 100 metres above downtown Ōamaru and Friendly Bay. This vantage point not only has panoramic views but also serves as a gateway to various walking and mountain biking tracks. These trails extend eastward over the cape and descend to the coast at Second Beach.

The lookout is particularly stunning at dawn and dusk, when the changing light enhances the landscape.

How to Get There

To reach Ōamaru Lookout Point, the easiest route is via Tyne Street, which extends from the south end of Thames Street in central Ōanaru. From Tyne Street, take a left turn onto Tamar Street. The lookout is just over 500 metres from this point, and parking is available directly at the lookout if you prefer to drive.

There are many other nearby activities. To the north of Ōamaru Lookout Point, you can find the little blue penguin colony, while the free-to-view hoiho (yellow-eyed penguins) can be seen at Bushy Beach. Explore the town's Victorian heritage and the nearby Ōamaru Public Gardens.
