Exploring Hooks Bay Track on Waiheke Island

Hooks Bay Track is located at the far northeast end of Waiheke Island, beginning at the Stony Batter Reserve. This walk is notable for its descent of nearly 200 metres to the scenic beach at Hooks Bay. As you walk along the track, you'll enjoy impressive views across farmland towards the Hauraki Gulf, north of the reserve.

Route Options and Scenic Views

There are two main routes to Hooks Bay. The easier path follows a private road past the entrance to Stony Batter Reserve. At the road's fork, head north.

Alternatively, you can traverse the pasture land at the top of the reserve, north of the east side gun batteries. Although there is no formal trail here, you should spot a gate in the reserve boundary fence. This allows you to head downhill through the grass, roughly parallel to the road. This higher route offers superior views. Note that the track is closed from August 1st to September 31st due to the lambing season.

How to Get to There

To reach Stony Batter from Oneroa, drive to Onetangi and take Waiheke Road to Man O’War Road. Turn onto Stonybatter Road and park in the car park at the end. From there, walk two kilometres along the private road to the reserve. Once at the reserve access, continue along the road and follow the north branch towards the Hauraki Gulf. Plan for about 2.5 hours to complete the walk.

You can also explore the Stony Batter Fortress, wander among the intriguing rocks on the south side of the access road, follow the Opopo Bay Track and visit nearby Man o’War Bay, with another beautiful beach and winery restaurant.
