Oneroa, the largest town on Waiheke Island in the Hauraki Gulf of Auckland, is just 2 km from the Ferry Terminal at Matiatia Bay, on the eastern side of the island. This charming town is a hub for dining and shopping, with its palm-lined main street, Ocean View Road, offering a variety of restaurants, cafés, and shops. Many eateries provide stunning northerly views over Oneroa Bay, making it a delightful spot to relax and enjoy the scenery.
A Bustling Hub for Island Visitors
As the main centre for organising tours and exploring the island, Oneroa is a natural first stop for most visitors arriving on Waiheke. The town is a convenient launch point for everything from wine tours and e-bike rentals to art gallery visits and beach walks. This small but vibrant coastal village boasts an excellent range of cafés, restaurants, and boutiques, many with outdoor seating and sea views that add to the island vibe.
Stroll the main street, and you’ll find local art galleries like Toi Gallery and Space Gallery, perfect for discovering original New Zealand artworks. Foodies can enjoy wood-fired pizza at Dragonfired, grab artisan gelato, or settle into a wine bar for a tasting of Waiheke wines. The village also has gourmet delis, a boutique cinema, and a Saturday market (in nearby Ostend) that’s worth timing your visit around.
Beaches Near Oneroa
Oneroa is located next to two beautiful beaches. Big Oneroa Beach is just a few minutes' walk from the main street, offering a quick escape to sandy shores. Little Oneroa Beach is a bit further, about a 12-minute walk from the town centre, providing another lovely spot to unwind by the water.
Getting to Oneroa
Reaching Oneroa is straightforward, with a 35-minute ferry ride from Downtown Auckland. From the Ferry Terminal at Matiatia Bay, it's a 25-minute walk or a short bus ride to the town.
From Matiatia Bay, you can also take longer scenic walks into Oneroa, either via Te Ara Hura North or Te Ara Hura South. These walks are sections of Te Ara Hura, a 60 km circuit of the island.
Other places to explore on the island include Palm Beach, Onetangi, Stony Batter, Man o’War Bay and Whakanewha Regional Park.
