Lower Te Piringa Track

Discovering Lower Te Piringa Track

Situated in the Waitākere Ranges of Auckland, the Lower Te Piringa Track begins at the Cascade Kauri car park at the end of Falls Road. This track forms the northern section of the Montana Heritage Trail, a 9.4 km loop that typically takes about four hours to complete. The trail is known for its ancient kauri trees and provides access to the Waitākere Reservoir and dam. Track upgrades have been implemented to protect the forest from kauri dieback.

A Short Stroll by the Waitākere River

For those with limited time, the Lower Te Piringa Track offers a delightful 30-minute walk along the Waitākere River. While the river is not deep enough for swimming, there are several spots are ideal for soaking, particularly near the bridge over the river.

Cultural and Historical Context

At the start of your walk, take a moment to explore the informative panels near the lower car park. These panels highlight the rejuvenation of the Cascade Kauri, a project significantly influenced by the local iwi, Kawerau ā Maki. The track was renamed Te Piringa, meaning the coming together of people and cultures, replacing its former name, Auckland City Walk.

Walking the Track

Begin the walk from the information panels at the car park and proceed to the wāhi whakanoa, where you can rinse your hands before entering the forest. Cross the bridge over the Waitākere River and follow the path alongside the river to a pou marking the start of the Upper Kauri Track.

The track continues to wind near the river, passing large kahikatea trees. At the end of the track, you'll find a seat with a view of a large kauri tree. Here, the track transitions into the Fenceline Track, which ascends steeply to the Waitākere Reservoir through a grove of ancient kauri.

Getting to Lower Te Piringa Track
