Discovering Cascade Kauri in the Waitākere Ranges

Cascade Kauri, located within the Waitākere Ranges Regional Park in New Zealand, is renowned for its ancient kauri trees and picturesque waterfalls on the Cascade Stream. Originally part of the Auckland Centennial Memorial Park established in 1940, this area has evolved into a significant natural reserve. The park's rich history and diverse ecosystems make it a compelling destination for nature enthusiasts.

Restoration and Conservation Efforts

The Ark in the Park project, initiated in 2000, prioritised the restoration of Cascade Kauri. With its intact forest and diverse ecosystems, the area was ideal for conservation efforts. Predator control began in 2002 and continues to protect the native flora and fauna. Although access was closed in 2017 due to kauri dieback, it reopened in late 2023 with upgraded tracks, including the Montana Heritage Trail.

Exploring the Montana Heritage Trail

The Montana Heritage Trail is a 9.4 km loop that takes approximately four hours to complete. It begins at the lower car park at the end of Falls Road, accessible via Te Henga Road. The trail offers a journey through the kauri forest and connects to the Waitākere Reservoir. Information panels and a trail map are available near the car park to guide you.

The Trail's Path and Cultural Significance

Lower Te Piringa Track, formerly known as the Auckland City Walk, leads from the car park to the Upper Kauri Track. It follows the Waitākere River and connects with the Fenceline Track. The track's new name, Te Piringa, was given by local iwi Kawerau ā Maki, symbolising the coming together of people and cultures. The loop is completed by the Long Road Track, which links the Upper Kauri and Fenceline tracks.

A Journey Through the Forest

Starting from the car park, follow the Lower Te Piringa Track to the wāhi whakanoa, where you can rinse your hands before entering the forest. This spiritual cleansing is significant due to the ongoing risks to the kauri trees. Cross the bridge over the Waitākere River to reach the Upper Kauri Track, where you can begin the loop. The track ascends steeply to boardwalks among kauri trees, offering views of both young and ancient specimens. You might also encounter pūriri, Kirk’s tree daisy, and northern rātā, along with reintroduced toutouwai and kōkako birds.

Connecting Tracks and Historical Insights

After about 90 minutes, you'll reach Smyth Corner and the Long Road Track. This undulating path leads through forest regrowth to the Fenceline Track, a historic route once used by millers and farmers. Information panels along the way provide insights into the area's past. The Long Road Track also connects to Pae o Te Rangi Regional Park and Bethells Road.

The Fenceline Track descends steeply to the Waitākere Reservoir, following its edge to the dam. From the dam, you can walk to the car park on Scenic Drive or explore the area below the dam, including the top of Waitākere Falls. Facilities such as toilets are available at the dam's far end. The track then follows the ridge before descending among ancient kauri trees back to the Lower Piringa Track.

Choosing Your Path

You can walk the loop in either direction, but starting with the Upper Kauri Track offers a less steep ascent. The most significant kauri trees are found near the ridgelines. If you prefer a shorter walk, consider a 60 to 90-minute round trip on either side of the loop to see these majestic trees.

Getting to Cascade Kauri

To reach Cascade Kauri, drive to the lower car park at the end of Falls Road, accessible via Te Henga Road. The final stretch of Falls Road is metalled and passes through the Waitākere Golf Course. Once there, you can explore the Montana Heritage Trail and enjoy the natural beauty of the Waitākere Ranges. Nearby, you can also visit the Waitākere Reservoir and the top of Waitākere Falls for more scenic experiences.
