Exploring the Fenceline Track in Waitākere Ranges Regional Park

The Fenceline Track, part of the Montana Heritage Trail loop, is located in the Cascade Kauri area of Waitākere Ranges in Auckland. The loop track offers a unique opportunity to see ancient kauri trees up close. It provides the best access to these majestic trees south of Waipoua Forest on the Kauri Coast in Northland. The Fenceline Track is the section of the loop that runs from the Cascades Stream near the start of the loop up to and along the west side of the Waitākere Reservoir, starting with ancient kauri, then native forest regrowth, with some large exotic pines at its southern end, where it connects to the historic Long Road Track.

Navigating the Fenceline Track

From the Kauri Cascades car park at the end of Falls Road, take the Lower Te Piringa Track across the Waitākere River. As you continue along the river, you'll pass a pou marking the start of the Upper Kauri Track. Cross the bridge over Cascades Stream to reach the beginning of the Fenceline Track near the river.

The track involves a steep 180-metre climb to the ridge line, featuring many steps. Raised steps and boardwalks protect the ancient kauri trees on this part of the track from kauri dieback, and allowing you to get close to these impressive giants. It takes about 45 minutes to reach the top of the ridge from the car park, but you can turn back earlier if you've had your fill of kauri.

Reaching the Ridge and Beyond

Once you reach the ridge, the path becomes easier. You'll walk an additional kilometre through the forest, with views of the Waitākere Reservoir and dam. From the dam, you can explore the reservoir and walk up to Scenic Drive in about 20 minutes. You can also visit the top of the Waitākere Falls below the dam. Continuing past the reservoir takes you to Simla Corner to connect with the Long Road Track. Continue on Long Road to Upper Kauri Track to complete the entire loop. The loop takes about four hours.

Getting to the Fenceline Track

Access to Kauri Cascades is at the end of Falls Road, off Te Henga Road, a short distance west of the intersection of Te Henga Road with Scenic Drive.

Nearby on Scenic Drive, you'll find access to the Pukematekeo viewpoint and the Spragg Bush Track. Continuing west on Te Henga Road takes you to Lake Wainamu and Te Henga / Bethells Beach.
