Exploring the Mason Bay to Freshwater Landing Track

Located on Stewart Island, the 14.1 km track between Mason Bay and Freshwater Landing offers a scenic and relatively easy hiking experience. A highlight of this journey is the opportunity to take a power boat ride from Freshwater Landing to Oban, which significantly reduces the hiking time by 5 to 6 hours.

Journey Through History and Nature

Starting at Mason Bay, you will walk one kilometre through sand dunes to reach the Mason Bay Hut, managed by the Department of Conservation (DOC). The path then leads you through the remnants of a failed sheep farming venture, where you can see old fences, pasture, a shearing shed, and the Island Hill Homestead, which serves as a living museum.

Continuing on, a short boardwalk crosses a wetland area, offering views of the expansive dunes behind Mason Bay beach. The next part of the track is a 4 km stretch alongside the Scott Burn Stream. Be cautious here, as this section can flood during heavy rain. If the water level is above the flood indicator marks at either end, it is advisable not to proceed.
