Exploring Murrays Bay
Murrays Bay is a coastal suburb and a beautiful small sandy bay on the North Shore of Auckland. One of the highlights of Murrays Bay is its scenic setting with cliffs to either side of the attractive beach. Services around the beach are limited, making it a quiet local experience compared to some of the larger beaches along this coast.
Beach Features and Activities
Murrays Bay is known for its inviting and safe swimming conditions in the Hauraki Gulf. The beach is bordered by a reserve, providing a pleasant environment for relaxation. There is a boat ramp at the northern end of the beach, and you'll find a long jetty. This jetty is a popular spot for fishing and offers an exciting opportunity to jump into the sea.
The beach and cliff-lined coast lie along the North Shore Coastal Walk, which is also part of Te Araroa. The trail provides an easy foot connection with Mairangi Bay to the south and Rothesay Bay to the north.
Exploring Tatarata Point
At the northeast end of Murrays Bay, Tatarata Point, with colourful cliffs topped by pōhutukawa trees, is a notable feature. You can walk around the point at low tide. Alternatively, a path over the point leads back to the beach just below Rothesay Bay. From there, you can follow a rocky platform above the high-tide line to the point. In calm conditions, you can swim from the rocks.
How to Get There
Murrays Bay can be reached on Beach Road, the main route connecting most of the beaches on the northeast side of the North Shore. From Auckland, take the northern motorway to the Constellation Road off-ramp. Head northeast on Constellation Drive, then on East Coast Road. Turn north at the intersection with Sunrise Avenue and follow this to Beach Road, which connects to the beach at Murrays Bay. Park on the side of the road.
Following the North Shore Coastal Walk north, you can connect with Browns Bay beyond Rothesay Bay. To the south, you reach Campbells Bay and Red Bluff beyond Mairangi Bay.
