Exploring the Scenic Path at Murrays Bay
Located at the north end of Murrays Bay on the North Shore of Auckland, a scenic path runs from the beach and the south end of Gulf View Road above the wharf to the top of the cliff face, with superb views along the way. This section of the North Shore Coastal Walk (also a section of Te Araroa) connects this bay to Rothesay Bay, with the short clifftop walk an outstanding feature.
The Path and Its Features
The path follows a narrow reserve between the cliff's edge and the houses on Tatarata Point. It takes about 10 minutes to traverse before descending into Churchill Reserve. Along this route, you'll find several excellent viewpoints that offer panoramic views of the Hauraki Gulf and the coast.
Below the reserve, a gap in the cliff provides access to the shoreline. Here, you can discover a charming "fairy grotto" to the left. From this point, you can choose to explore south back below the colourful cliffs around the point or continue north along the coast on a sandy and rocky platform, below more cliffs, to reach the small beach at Rothesay Bay.
Getting to Murrays Bay
To reach Murrays Bay from Auckland, take the northern motorway to the Constellation Road off-ramp. Head northeast on Constellation Drive, then on East Coast Road. Turn north at the intersection with Sunrise Avenue and follow this to Beach Road, which connects to the beach at Murrays Bay. Park on the side of the road.
South of Murrays Bay on the North Shore Coastal Track are Mairangi Bay and Campbells Bay. To the north of Rothesay Bay is Browns Bay.
