Discover New Regent Street in Christchurch

Located in Central Christchurch, New Regent Street is a charming pedestrian mall known for its Spanish Mission architectural style. Built in the early 1930s, this 100-metre-long street features 40 shops and is a significant tourist attraction. The street is lively with the tram running alongside outdoor cafes and bar seating, creating a vibrant atmosphere. Situated between Armagh Street to the north and Gloucester Street to the south, New Regent Street is just a block away from Cathedral Square.

Historical Background

The concept for New Regent Street was proposed around 1929 by a group of businessmen led by Arthur Francis Stacey. They envisioned a Spanish-themed street and presented their idea to the Christchurch City Council's town planning committee. The project received approval in February 1930.

Initially, the developers wanted to name it Regent Street after London's famous street, but due to an existing Regent Street in Sydenham, it was named New Regent Street instead. A notable feature at the time was its 400-lamp lighting system, which drew crowds during its initial testing. Although the street opened during the Great Depression, the developers eventually sold the individual stores, and the street was transferred to public ownership after World War II. The tramline, a key feature since 1995, adds to the street's charm.
