North Mole: Whanganui's Sunset Haven

North Mole, located on the north side of the Whanganui River mouth, is renowned for its stunning sunsets. Just a short drive from downtown Whanganui, this spot is also the endpoint of the Mountains to Sea Cycle Trail. Its location between the river and a black sand surf beach makes it a striking destination.

Scenic Views and Beach Features

From North Mole, you can enjoy a clear view of Mt Taranaki to the northwest, even from sea level. The beach, at the south end of Castlecliff Beach, is notable for its dramatic piles of driftwood. On windy days, the waves become particularly dynamic, adding to the beach's appeal.

Why North Mole Was Built

North Mole was constructed in the late 1800s and early 1900s as part of major harbour works designed to stabilise the mouth of the Whanganui River and improve navigation for shipping. The river’s shifting sand bars and strong coastal currents made access dangerous, prompting engineers to build the North and South Moles and to narrow and deepen the river channel. Mainly built from locally quarried stone and concrete blocks, the North Mole extended seaward to deflect sediment and reduce wave action. Its completion enabled safer passage for coastal vessels, although coastal shipping later declined as the road network was developed. Today, the North Mole is a prominent historical structure and a reminder of the scale of early coastal engineering efforts.
