Okia Reserve and the Pyramids

Discover the Pyramids at Okia Reserve

Located on the northern side of Papanui Inlet, Okia Reserve is a fascinating destination for those interested in unique geological formations and scenic views. The reserve is home to two pyramid-shaped hills, aptly named the Pyramids, which offer a glimpse into the area's volcanic past. A visit here provides not only an opportunity to explore these intriguing formations but also a chance to enjoy the expansive views across the Okia Flats towards Victory Beach.

Exploring the Pyramids

To reach the Pyramids, head west along Dick Road until you reach the parking area at its end. From there, enter Okia Reserve and follow the flat farm road leading to the Pyramids. The two pyramid-shaped hills are easily recognisable, and you can hike up the one on the right via an unmarked but obvious track. Although the path is rough, the climb is short and rewards you with a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape.

Geological Features and Scenic Views

At the top of the right-hand Pyramid, you'll find a rock platform showcasing columnar basalt formations, reminiscent of the Organ Pipes near Mt Cargill. For a clearer view of these formations, walk around to the west side of the Pyramid, where you'll also discover a sheltering rock overhang. The unique geological features and the stunning vistas make this a worthwhile stop for nature enthusiasts.

Protecting Native Wildlife

The Okia Reserve is managed by the Yellow-Eyed Penguin Trust to protect the breeding grounds of the native hoiho. As such, dogs are not permitted anywhere in the reserve to ensure the safety and preservation of this vulnerable species.

How to Get There

To visit the Pyramids at Okia Reserve, drive along Dick Road on the northern side of Papanui Inlet until you reach the parking area at the road's end. From there, it's a straightforward walk into the reserve. After exploring the Pyramids, you can continue your adventure by walking another kilometre across the Okia Flats to reach Victory Beach.
