Discover Sandfly Bay
Sandfly Bay, situated on the Pacific Coast of the Otago Peninsula in Dunedin, is a captivating spot for those seeking a secluded beach experience. Despite its misleading name, you won't find any sandflies here. Instead, the beach is renowned for its vast expanse of mostly white sand, accented with gold and yellow streaks, and bordered by impressive dunes. Early and late in the day, you might encounter pakake (sea lions) and penguins.
A Remote Beach Experience
Sandfly Bay is perfect for those who appreciate remote beaches. The beach is accessible from a car park at the end of a rural road, with no nearby houses to disturb the tranquillity. From the car park, a short but steep trail descends 120 metres through the dunes to the beach, taking about 20 minutes each way. If you're short on time, a viewing platform offers stunning views of the beach and is just a few minutes' walk from the car park.
The south-facing surf beach stretches approximately 1.5 km, with Seal Point extending to the west and a rocky point below Sandymount to the east. A track from the east end of the beach leads through the dunes to the car park at Sandymount. The dunes are extensive, reaching back from the beach by up to 1 to 2 km in some areas. On the beach, you are likely to encounter pakake (sea lions), and at dawn and dusk, it becomes an excellent spot for observing penguins. Remember to keep at least 10 metres away from the sea lions; they may appear sluggish but can move quickly if disturbed.
If you're considering a swim, exercise caution and stick to a rising tide, as there is no surf patrol.
How to Get to Sandfly Bay
To reach Sandfly Bay from Dunedin, take Portsmouth Drive, Portobello Road, and Marne Street to Somerville Street in Andersons Bay at the south end of the Otago Peninsula. Drive up Somerville Street until it meets Highcliff Road, then follow Highcliff Road along the high peninsula ridge. Turn south onto Seal Point Road, where you'll find the car park at the end of the road.
Nearby, you can explore other remote locations on the peninsula, such as Smaills Beach, Allans Beach, Okia Reserve and the Pyramids, and Victory Beach.
