Discovering Ōmana Beach on the Pōhutukawa Coast

Ōmana Beach is located on the Pōhutukawa Coast of Auckland, nestled between Maraetai and Ōmana Regional Park. This 700-metre stretch of beach is known for its striking white and gold sand. It begins at the eastern end of the regional park and extends past a residential area to a rocky point, which separates it from Te Pene Beach. A rocky section can also be found about a third of the way along the beach heading east.

Access and Amenities

The beach is a short walk from the central car park and barbecue area at the west end of Ōmana Regional Park. A shared path, part of the Beachlands to Maraetai Walkway, runs between the beach and Ōmana Esplanade. You can also access the beach from Omana Beach Road, off Maraetai Drive.

Parking is limited at the west end of Ōmana Esplanade; however, additional parking is available in front of a reserve and playground about 300 metres along the road.

Enjoying the Beach

Ōmana Beach is generally quieter than nearby Maraetai Beach, especially outside of summer weekends. It is a safe swimming spot, though water quality can vary during the summer months. It is advisable to check Swim Safe for current conditions before heading out.

How to Get There

To reach Ōmana Beach from Downtown Auckland, take the southern motorway to the East Tamaki Road off-ramp. Head east on East Tamali Road, then Ormiston Road to Flat Bush. Ormiston Road veers north-northeast, then becomes Sandstone Road. At the intersection with Whitford Park Road, turn north to Whitford. At Whitford, follow Whitford Maraetai Road past Beachlands, where it becomes Maraetai Drive. Continue on Maraetai Drive, then turn left onto Omana Beach Road. You can park in Ōmana Regional Park above the west end of the beach, or look for a car park about 300 metres along Omana Esplanade in front of the beach. The drive takes 44 minutes and is 39 km.

Other beaches on the Pōhutukawa Coast include Sunkist Bay and Shelly Bay in Beachlands, Waiomanu Beach and Magazine Bay east of Maretai.
