Discover the Onamalutu Scenic Reserve

Located in the Onamalutu Valley, just a 30-minute drive from Blenheim, the Onamalutu Scenic Reserve is a beautiful destination on the edge of the Richmond Range. This reserve features a DOC campsite and a grassy area adjacent to a remnant podocarp forest. Here, you can find ancient kahikatea and tōtara trees. These are rare in the region due to extensive deforestation when European settlers converted the Richmond Range valleys into farmland in the 1800s.

The Origin of Onamalutu

The name Onamalutu might sound Polynesian, but it is actually a mispronunciation and misspelling of Ōhinemahuta, the name of the river flowing through the valley. The reserve was established in 1901 when a local sawmiller donated the remaining stand of ancient forest and the surrounding cleared land for public recreation.

Exploring the Reserve

Within the reserve, several short tracks weave through the forest, providing a peaceful opportunity to immerse yourself in nature. The expansive grassy area is perfect for camping and recreational activities. The Ōhinemahuta River, which enhances the reserve's scenic charm, can be accessed via a short walk through the forest. While the river is picturesque, be aware that sandflies are common, so come prepared.

For the Adventurous: Wakamarina Track

For those seeking adventure, the Wakamarina Track is a historical hiking experience. This track follows the path of old gold miners, linking the Wairau Valley to the Wakamarina Valley. It begins 8 km west of the Onamalutu Reserve on gravel Kiwi Road, an extension of Onamalutu Road.

How to Get There

To visit the Onamalutu Scenic Reserve, head west of Blenheim on State Highway 6 and turn onto Northbank Road just after crossing the Wairau River bridge. Continue for about 6 km, then turn right onto Onamalutu Road. Follow this road for another 7 km to reach the campsite. The drive takes 29 minutes and is 32 km.

Within the Richmond Range, you can also explore the Staircase Road, the Enchanted Lookout and Lake Chalice Track.
