Exploring the Muriwai Gannet Colony Walk

Located on the Muriwai side of the Muriwai Gannet Colony, a set of steps leads you down to a striking rock platform. This platform extends from the end of Ōtakamiro Point, situated below the northern end of the gannet colony. It is a favoured spot for fishing and is a unique view of the dramatic cliffs beneath the colony. From here, you can also see the steep-sided Motutara Island, a prominent feature in many photographs taken from the walkway viewpoints.

Safety Tips for Your Visit

When visiting, exercise caution near the edge of the rock platform, especially as the tide rises. The surf's splash and wash can be captivating, so stay alert to ensure your safety.

How to Get There

From Downtown Auckland, take the western motorway, then State Highway 16 towards Waimauku, then take Muriwai Road and follow the signs to Muriwai Beach. The drive takes 40 minutes and is 40 km.

Nearby, you can visit Maukatia Bay and check out the Maukatia Bay Tunnel. Further north, you can discover Tirikohua via the Muriwai end of Te Henga Walkway.
