Exploring Ōtepātotu Reserve's Scenic Viewpoints
Ōtepātotu Reserve is located on Banks Peninsula on Summit Road, roughly halfway between the intersections with Okains Bay Road and Le Bons Bay Road. The reserve combines two remarkable viewpoints accessible via the Ōtepātotu Track with a rare section of old-growth forest and craggy cliffs. In addition, it provides panoramic views of Akaroa Harbour and its surrounds.
The First Viewpoint: A Quick Climb
The first viewpoint is just a short, steep climb on steps through the forest. After a couple of minutes, veer left towards the edge of a cliff. This spot is safe and provides an uninterrupted view across Akaroa Harbour, making it an ideal location for a quick scenic stop.
Reaching Lavericks Peak
For a longer hike, continue along the track to reach the peak of Lavericks, a climb of 255 metres to the peak at 755 metres, which takes about 45 minutes. This longer trek takes you through beautiful old-growth native forest, with a goblin forest appearance towards the top. At the top, you are rewarded with a nearly 360-degree view of the area, providing a comprehensive perspective on the landscape. There is also a windmill!
Creation of the Reserve
The reserve was established in 1930 to protect one of the few remaining pockets of original forest in the region, following widespread deforestation across Banks Peninsula in the 1800s. About 15 ha beside Lavericks Peak were fenced off. Later additions, 22.7 ha in 1980 and 2.2 ha at Tysons Knob, expanded the reserve.
Today, Ōtepātotu features a rich mix of native tree species, including mataī, tōtara, kahikatea, and kānuka, which cloak the steep gullies and provide habitat for native birds like korimako (bellbirds) and piwakawaka (fantails).
The name Ōtepātotu can be loosely translated as "the place of fairies," which seems fitting given the stunning strip of goblin forest. Alongside the old forest is a strip of regrowth, and at the start of the track is a significant grassed area with a toilet, ideal for picnics.
How to Get There
To reach the Ōtepātotu Track, head towards Banks Peninsula, which is accessible from Christchurch. Follow State Highway 75 towards Akaroa, then take Summit Road from Top End. Continue until you see signs for the reserve. The drive takes 90 minutes and is 83 km.
