Paekākāriki: A Gem on the Kāpiti Coast
Paekākāriki, a charming coastal town on the Kāpiti Coast, offers a unique village atmosphere distinct from its neighbouring towns. Situated between Pukerua Bay to the south and Raumati to the north, Paekākāriki is known for its rustic charm. As you exit the main highway, you'll find several inviting cafés and restaurants, along with a vibrant artist co-op. The town's restored Victorian-era railway station houses a delightful museum and a second-hand bookshop, making it a must-visit spot for history enthusiasts and book lovers.
Activities and Attractions
While the beach in Paekākāriki may not offer the same beachcombing opportunities as nearby Pukerua Bay, it is the southern end of a long, sweeping bay that stretches towards Kāpiti Island. This makes it an ideal location for biking, walking, and enjoying the sand and water. Whether you're looking to relax or engage in outdoor activities, the beach provides a scenic backdrop for your adventures.
Paekākāriki is also a key point on Te Araroa, New Zealand's long-distance walking trail. The Paekākāriki Escarpment Track, a popular section of the trail, begins at the railway crossing in town. This track offers stunning views and a rewarding hiking experience for those who choose to explore it.
Queen Elizabeth Park is also accessible from the north end of the town.
